Gilmour Space Secures Approval for Australia's First Orbital Spaceport
Gilmour Space, a Gold Coast-based aerospace and technology company, has achieved a significant milestone in Australia's space journey.
The company has secured approval for the nation's first orbital spaceport, marking a historic leap in the country's space exploration efforts.
What is it?
Gilmour Space's Bowen Orbital Spaceport, located in north Queensland's Abbot Point State Development Area, is now operational.
This cutting-edge facility is designed to offer orbital launch services for satellite platforms and enable dedicated or rideshare launches into low Earth orbits.
Facility approval
The space facility came under the Space (Launches & Returns) Act 2018, with Federal Minister for Industry and Science, Ed Husic, granting the license. He is also the minister in charge of the Australian Space Agency.
Gilmour Space has secured approval from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water to operate at Abbot Point.
What does it mean to us?
Launching our own satellites from Australia, using launch vehicles under our control, will be a game-changing capability for Australia.
Let us look at the numbers
Gilmour Space has a workforce of over 200 individuals.
Increase their manpower to over 300 by mid-2027 as the development comes.
$$$ savings by using this homegrown spaceport instead of paying and using other countries’ facilities.
$$$ possible income from other countries, clients and organisations who would use the spaceport.
Quotes
"Australia now has its own 'road' to space," said Gilmour Space Co-founder and CEO, Adam Gilmour.
James Gilmour, Co-founder and Head of Launch Operations at Gilmour Space - " …it will be exciting to see 'rocket tourism' emerging to support the local economy."
Looking forward
Pending approval of the launch permit from the Australian Space Agency, Eris TestFlight 1 is set to launch in the upcoming months.
Expect more opportunities for not only space exploration but maybe space tourism and collateral benefits for this.
